History

Serve and Protect Credit Union was founded in September 2003, through a series of mergers with like-minded credit unions. In total, seven credit unions that served police forces across the United Kingdom came together which inspired our mission statement at the time of “Strength in Unity”. These credit unions were:

  • West Midlands Police Credit Union
  • Northumbria Police Credit Union
  • Merseyside Police Credit Union
  • Hertfordshire Constabulary Credit Union
  • Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Credit Union
  • Cleveland Constabulary Credit Union
  • Money Mate Credit Union

This merger allowed the credit union to reinvest in its members, deepen relationships with police forces across the country, support great causes, and build a community of those who serve and protect. It wasn’t until 2012 that the credit union decided to expand to other sectors, opening its field of membership to the Prison & Probation Service. In 2015, the credit union continued to increase its scope across the public sector by opening up to the Armed Forces Community. This was followed by further expansion in 2020 to the Fire & Rescue Services and the Health & Social Care sector.
